As of June 30, new crop shipments from Xinjiang Province to the East reached 2.5 million tons, which included a very small tonnage of imported Central Asian cotton. In addition, Xinjiang’s textile mills are estimated to have consumed approximately 350,000 tons of cotton in 2006/07 -- 2007 yarn output is up 23 percent. This estimate would confirm early rumors of a 2006/07 cotton crop of near 2.8 million tons, which represents a new all-time record for the province. It also divulges the challenge faced by statisticians in attempting to measure production in such a large geographical and diverse region.
