Boosted by June yarn output climbing to a record 2.0 million tons recently detailed here, production remains on track to climb to unprecedented levels in 2007/08. Through the first eleven months of the marketing year cumulative volume is up 11.1% from this period last year, driven by faster growth in medium-sized producing provinces. The four fastest-growing regions this year—Henan, Zhejiang, Hunan, and Jiangxi Provinces—each are seeing cumulative yarn output over 20% higher than this period last year, while the rest of China is up only 6.8%. These mid-tier provinces together only account for hardly one fourth of the national output of yarn, but have seen their volumes and collective share rise rapidly over the last eighteen months. While Shandong and Jiangsu Provinces remain the largest yarn producers in China accounting for almost half of total output, capacity appears to be moving further south and inland in search of lower costs for labor and land.
